I'll be heading home in a little more than a week. I'm gonna visit as many people as I can when I get back to catch up with people. Email me or leave a reply if you want me to visit you: crmccar@yahoo.com.

It looks like I'll be spending this summer at K to do my SIP. Someone please get me a job in Kalamazoo that pays more than $5 an hour... please...

We had a really good rain for the first time since we've been here. I was at the store when it started, and it had stopped by the time I left, but it managed to make ankle deep rivers out of the roads for me to walk back in. The good thing about living here, though, is that I was already wearing sandals and shorts, so it didn't matter.

Paul almost got sent home for that incident I wrote about last week. Fortunately, they decided to give him another chance.

Our program director from K College, Angela, came and visited us. She does that with every group she oversees, and she took us out to a really nice restaurant on the college bill. It was pretty awesome.

On Friday, we took a boat to an island that has a really amazing cave under it. Well, I don't know if it was that great a cave because I have no basis for comparison, but I liked it alot. I'm gonna take my mom and Caitlin there when they visit.

I've still been trying to get pictures up. I've tried a couple different hosting sites, including webshots.com and photobucket.com, but haven't gotten either of them to work right. It's probably because the internet and computers here have so much trouble.

Otherwise, I had a pretty lazy weekend. Today we're going to a Hindu prayer session, or something like that. I don't really know anything about it except that they're going to feed us.

    Hey everyone,

Sorry it's been so long since I updated; I've been getting frustrated with the slow internet and 30 minute time limit on the computers.

This week we started our tutorials, which are supposed to be extra classes that are more interactive to help us understand the lectures better. Basically this means I have 15 hours of classtime now instead of 9, which is kind of a bummer, but I suppose spring break had to end some time. We'll still be doing plenty of adventerous things, but they'll have to be more confined to the weekend.

My drunk roommate, Paul, almost got us kicked out of our villa last week. They found this rum called Puncheon which has 75% alcohol, and the other guys shared a fifth between the three of them. Paul got trashed, and started making trouble, scaring the landlady half to death. We actually looked into apartments, and there's a possibility of moving, but they wouldn't be as nice, and the landlady is willing to let us stay as long as it doesn't happen again. I'd give it about a 50-50 chance of us moving at some time in the next few weeks. Paul was really sorry about it the next day, and is trying to keep it under control, but he's already been drunk again since then (just not as completely trashed). I don't know whether he'll be able to stay at least somewhat dry the rest of the trip.

Today I'm hailing from a computer store at the mall. They have about 30 computers set up for people to use for internet, games, or microsoft office. It costs $10 TT per hour, which is a little less than US$2, so I think it's a pretty good deal. You get better prices if you buy more at a time, too. Anyways, there's not all that much to update. We've started to settle down into a routine after our initial flurry of tourist activity. It gets pretty boring sometimes at the villa when we don't plan something to do for the day. I've been trying to get some people into euchre, and we played a couple games last night. We've been talking lately about doing some less touristy stuff. This weekend, we might be going to an orphanage to meet and lime with the kids there. Apparently, our political science teacher is taking a large group of kids there, so we'd probably be the oldest, as well as the whitest, people there.

One more thing before I sign off. For those who don't know, yesterday was my sister's birthday. Happy Birthday, Chloe!

    No pictures :(
Well, I'm not sure how the picture thing works. I've seen other people upload pictures into their updates, but I can't get it to work. If someone posts a comment on how to do it, I'll try again on wednesday, or when I get out of class at four. If I still can't figure out how to do it, I'll email pictures to those who request it.

Yesterday, the guys went to an american-style restaurant for dinner. It was a very strange place. It had mooseheads and waitresses with cowboy hats. I had already eaten, so I just got some cheesecake, but they didn't recognize the name "New York style cheesecake"; they just called it strawberry cheesecake. It was still good, though. For some reason, Paul and Justin decided to take up painting, so they also bought $30 worth of supplies each while we were out. I limed (trini word for "hang out" or "party") at the villa for the rest of the day. I'll try to post some pictures of the place soon.

I didn't really have time on Monday to do anything but set up the account, so now I'll tell everyone what's going on.

Three days a week, our group of 8 takes a bus to the university. We're there for about 4 hours usually, and that is the only place I have access to the internet. The computers have a time limit of 30 minutes, so not many of my posts will be very long.

Anyways, the classes aren't very interesting. I have a literature, a political science, and an anthropology class, and they're all about the carribean. The professors seem to have a skewed sense of what Kalamazoo College students are like, but I haven't been able to figure out yet in which way they're skewed. We have one class a day for 3 hours, and each class meets once a week. So, at the moment, I only have 9 hours of class time a week. That changes on April 18, when the tutorials start. We're doing lectures right now, and I guess the tutorials are supposed to be a more interactive environment - I'm not sure. But we have 2 hours of tutorial per week per class, so I'll have 15 hours of classtime a week.

I've done a lot since I got here, and since I didn't have access to a computer until classes started, I haven't been able to keep up in writing, but I'll try to summarize.

I've been to the beach 3 times already, and have gotten pretty badly burned. Twice we went to Marracas Bay, which is pretty popular and has lots of food stands and music playing. Most of the food stands have shark sandwiches, which are pretty good. I've eaten them both times I went there. They taste more like meat than fish. While I was walking around the bay, I saw the fish and sharks they caught. The sharks were about 4 foot long hammerheads, which was pretty cool. Hammerhead sharks are among the weirdest looking animals, I think. Everywhere you go, the water is really warm, so I spent a lot of the time in the water. The waves are really great; some are about 10 feet tall and I would ride them halfway to the shore. The saltwater gets overwhelming after a while though, because you get it in your mouth and eyes because of the waves always splashing you. The other beach we went to was mostly deserted, and was also a lot of fun. We originally went there to fish, but it turns out that it's pretty useless, and we just played in the water. In the sand, there is a ridiculous amount of living sand dollars, and it took awhile to get used to the idea of stepping on them and having them all around your feet. We'll probably go on a real fishing trip at a later time, maybe on a boat. Well, that's all the time I have right now. I'll write some more tomorrow.

    Ok, I surrender
By popular request, I have started up a livejournal. If all goes well, I'll be updating it with my adventures in Trinidad about 3 times a week. Tell your friends!
